unbelevable! there was a TORNADO (or a microburst or something) in Brooklyn!!!
Tornado Warning For Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island The Office of Emergency Management issued alerts for this crazy weather, "Alert issued 9/16/10 at 5:35 PM. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning until 6:00 PM in Staten Island and Brooklyn. Immediately go indoors and/or to the lowest floor of your building for shelter. Stay away from windows," and "Tornado Warning issued for Queens until 6 PM. Take shelter on lower floors. Stay away from windows."

But I never got to see if that Emergency Management System on the TV they are always testing worked, since as the sky darkened, the wind pick up, lightening flashed and the thunder roared the power starting blinking on and off.

so many police
Does anyone know why there seems to be an increase in cops/squads around Rogers, south of Eastern Parkway?

I saw three squads and a couple officers when I was coming home last night around Midnight and a handful as I was wandering the streets this afternoon.

It's been awhile since I saw the street *this* patrolled.

Brooklyn Tourists Dream Caribbean Vacations Turn Into A Nightmare
Help is being requested in bringing to the public's attention the plight of six Brooklyn friends who went on a Carnival Cruise to the Caribbean and have ended up beaten and jailed in Antigua over a dispute in the fair with a taxi-driver.

This X-Posted from transgriotfeed's post Free The Antigua 6

Rachel Henry, certified chef; fashion and runway model
Shoshannah Henry, singer-songwriter; law school student
Dolores Lalanne, social worker
Nancy Lalanne, licensed practical nurse
Joshua Jackson, crew chief for an international airline and a customer service representative for a utilities company
Mike Pierre-Paul, licensed practical nurse

They were part of a group of a dozen Brooklyn, NY residents aboard a Carnival Cruise ship that docked at Antigua earlier this month.

The six negotiated a $50 fare with a cab driver to tour the island, but ended up in a dispute with the cabbie when he demanded double the amount at the end of the ride. When the group refused to pay the new amount, he drove the passengers to a police station away from the port where the cruise ship was docked.

The group was subsequently arrested and beaten by the Antiguan po-po's. They are facing numerous charges and had an Antiguan court hearing at 2 PM yesterday in which the all pleaded not guilty.

So What's the Murder Rate in YOUR Little Corner Of NYC?
Now you can check it out on another of those handy-dandy interactive maps (this time courtesy of the NY Times).

Murder: New York City
Each day, the New York Police Department announces major crimes, including most homicides, in the five boroughs. This data is compiled from those reports, in addition to news accounts, court records and additional reporting. The map will be updated as new information becomes available.

[Brooklyn] Man arrested for sitting on his own stoop in the evening having a beer
Fighting for the Right to Drink Beer on His Stoop
By Manny Fernandez in the New York Times 8 September 2008

Given a ticket for drinking a beer on his stoop, a Brooklyn resident is contesting his summons, questioning whether a stoop can be considered “a public place.”

This happened in my neighborhood, on my street (but not clear from the article how close it was to my house), but given that it was the 77th precinct he's lucky that is all that happened to him, they're lazy, brutal, corrupt and thuggish - and that's just their good qualities!

thinking of getting a cleaning person
I need information on what is customary when looking for a cleaning person in Brooklyn.

How much per hour is the going rate these days? For a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchen, living room, bathroom and connecting hallway already in OK condition (not a pig-sty but not "you could eat off the floors") about how many hours would it usually take?

Do cleaners usually also do laundry or would that be extra?

I've never done this before and neither have my friends so dear LJ please tell me all the ins and outs and current trends of all this in NYC these days.

anyone have a favorite brunch spot?

the tavern on nostrand used to be good, but they've been closed the past several times i've tried. Tom's (technically prospect heights) always has a line and they have such limited hours.

i like wandering out for saturday morning food.

bonus if they have free mimosa, etc. with brunch.
